HS Students Help 1st Grade Build Bird Feeders

Mrs Rieger reached out to me asking if I would like to team with her for an Environmental Science lesson. Of course, I agreed. A standard we cover in first grade is talking about animals and how they adapt to their surrounds and how their habitat helps them survive. Her students were learning about birds, so she thought a bird feeder project would be perfect. Her students were amazing with my kiddos and they helped them every step of the way. The high school students cut out the holes prior to coming to our classroom. Once they got to our classroom, my students were able to decorate their bird feeders any way they would like. She had beads, duct tape, sequins, stickers, all types of crafts. We split my classroom into two groups, so when one group was decorating the bird feeders, the other group was learning about birds through books and pictures, led by the high schoolers. Mrs Rieger's high school class did an amazing job working with my first graders. They were all engaged and very helpful to them all. They were so excited when they were able to take their bird feeders home and put them to use. I look forward to working with Mrs Rieger in the future. It was beneficial to everyone and a great learning experience for all.
